Grade 10 learner Khayalakitsi “Khaya” Mabuza (16) from the 1st Emtfonjeni Scout Group in Mpumalanga was one of the Scouts who received financial support from the World Scout Solidarity Fund, Scout Groups, parents and members of the public to attend the World Scout Jamboree in the USA. Khaya has grown up in Scouting, is a Patrol Leader and is actively involved in the preparation and running of Regional training, events and camps. We spoke to him about how this experience has opened up his horizons and has inspired him to dream.
“I remember how amazing it was to meet all the other Scouts from South Africa that were attending the jamboree with me. We first got to travel around the States together. In New York we visited places that are known around the world such as Madame Tussaud’s, Ripley’s Rockefeller Center and more! But getting to see the White House in Washington DC was the best thing ever! We also saw the Abraham Lincoln statue. I really liked exploring those cities.
When we arrived at the Jamboree I was so happy. It was so joyful and we got to go to the awesome campsite bashes and do exciting activities! I did barrel shooting, scuba diving, White River rafting and so much more!
Being part of the World Scout Jamboree opening ceremony was also so amazing! Our South African contingent was asked to be on stage with Lebo M from the Lion King. It was amazing because we had to perform in front of 45 000 or more Scouts and not only that, we got the chance to make history and represent South Africa at the jamboree!
I learnt so much at the jamboree. I realised that respecting other cultures helps a lot when it comes to making friends. I also saw how people celebrate their cultures and I got to share my culture with joy at the Cultural Day.
Being able to attend the World Scout Jamboree and travel in the States changed my life a lot. I learnt never to judge a book by its cover and to always try to make a good turn to someone else every day. I enjoyed my journey with joy and laughter. The people in my contingent were respectful and fun to be around. I want to continue to share this experience with other Scouts and finish my Matric.
I would like to say thank you very much to all the people that sponsored me. Thank you for the opportunity you have given me and my fellow Scouts. If it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t have got the chance to attend the World Scout Jamboree. May God be with you!
